The Building

The Municipal Library of Syros and the Ermoupoli Cultural Centre are housed in a beautiful neoclassical building located in the north-eastern corner of Miaouli Square in the city centre, next to the Town Hall.

This impressive example of romantic neoclassicism with Italian elements is now considered one of the most emblematic buildings in Ermoupoli and, in the past, housed the historic ‘Hellas Club’.
Its construction was completed in 1863, under the supervision of Italian architect Pietro Sampo, for the purpose of unifying the two clubs existing in Ermoupoli until then, the ‘Chians’ and ‘Non-Chians’, financed by Michail Salvagos, one of the richest Ermoupoli residents of that time. Externally, its monumental frontage features elaborate masonry and is divided into three equal parts with protruding lateral sections.

The upper level features balconies with marble parapets, while the central part of the ground level, featuring a triple portico with Tuscan columns joined together by semicircular arches, affords a particular charm to the building.

The Library is located on the ground level of the neoclassical building, includes reading rooms and a lending department, and faces a small verdant garden. The garden is home to busts erected in honour of scholars and artists from Syros who left an indelible mark on the spiritual life of the place, namely Dimitrios Vikelas, Emmanouil Roidis, Georgios Souris, Timoleon Ambelas, Rita Boumi-Papa and Kostis Bastias.
