The collections

The Municipal Library of Syros is housed on the ground level of the Cultural Centre, a beautiful 19th-century neoclassical building located in Miaouli Square.
It was officially founded in 1926 with an initial core of approximately 2,000 volumes from the collections of the library of the Gymnasium (1835) and, in particular, the library of Iakovos Rotas, a close friend of Adamantios Korais, of Anthimos Komninos, the Bishop of the Cyclades (1842), and others.

The valuable old books such as the ‘Argonautica’ of Apollonius of Rhodes (1521), Racine’s copy of Pollux’s ‘Onomasticon’ (1608), the ‘Giustiniani’ of Prince Rodokanakis — a rare edition from the island of Syros — and others are stored separately.

Since October 2010, the collection has been housed in a new hall, ceded by the Municipality and named after “Manos Eleftheriou” in honour of its greatest donor, developing into a beautiful, visitor-friendly space.

Approximately 60,000 volumes are available to the public, while the lending department is continually updated with new publications.

The collection also takes into account the educational needs of all levels of education.

Also of particular note is the collection of local newspapers stretching from the 19th century to date. The valuable archive of newspapers dating from 1837 to 1916 was digitised and digitally processed to render their content digitally accessible to the general public.
